Burlap Tutorial

Hi Everyone, we hope you are all having a great weekend!  It is still snowing here!  Not too much but enough to make spring feel very far away.  We have received a couple emails from our last post, asking how we made covered soap bars in burlap and made bows for a rose topiary.  You can find the post for the Burlap soap here and the Rose Topiary here.  So today we wanted to do a tutorial on how to make them!

First the Burlap Soap Bars

You will need soap bars, scissors, your choice of ribbon, and burlap.  You don't need wire to make the burlap covered soap (it is for the next part).

Cut the burlap in a square to cover the soap, the burlap should be a couple inches larger than the soap bar on each side.

Next stand the soap up and pull all corners around the soap.

The take your hand around the top of the soap and squeeze so you can tie the ribbon on. Squeeze tight!

We used a burlap ribbon, jute rope would look nice with these too!

Tie your bow at the top and you are done!  You can display these in different ways. We showed it here on a kitchen counter with a soap dispenser, some greens, and artichokes.

Or the picture below we showed it in a metal box in the powder room. You can display them in a basket, bowl, or anything you can think of.  Be creative!

Making the Bows for the Rose Topiary(pictured above):

Any type of ribbon will work to make these, we used a thin burlap ribbon.  

First make a loop and pinch the middle.

Then make two more loop still pinching the middle.

Where you were pinching the middle take a piece of wire and tie around the bow.  Now you have a three loop bow!  Keep the bow tails a little longer so they can flow nice on the topiary.

Next take the bow and put all loops on one side along with the bow tails.

Then you can hot glue it as seen above at the bottom of the topiary near the stem.  I put three bows on the bottom of this topiary!

Don't forget everyone you can be so creative here!  This is a great way to add something different to an existing topiary too!  We hope this helps and have fun creating!
